As many of you know, my name is Bailey Bram and I am a professional women’s ice hockey player (cool I know!). I am fortunate enough to play hockey and train for a living, so practicing a healthier lifestyle isn't always the most challenging thing for me. I am not naive though, and understand that not everyone's job revolves around being active. And, it isn't always easy to fit in a workout, and after a long day at work the motivation to workout can sometimes be lost. Read on if you need a few tips to live a healthier lifestyle.

So, here are a few simple tips to live a bit healthier and help get you off the couch!

1. Drink water!

I can’t stress enough how important drinking AT LEAST 8 cups of water a day is! Water helps hydrate your body, flush out toxins, clear your skin, prevent headaches, prevent cancer, put you in a better mood, and also lose weight! So drink up!

2. Take the stairs.

Cliché I know, but simply taking the stairs every day instead of the elevator can get the heart pumping quicker and help you feel a bit better!

3. Go for a walk!

Whether it’s in the morning, during your lunch break, or after dinner, get off the couch and take a quick 10-20 minute walk! Whether it’s alone (gain mental clarity), with a loved one (catch up on your day) or with your pet, get out there, take a stroll and I promise you will feel better and maybe eventually want to turn it into a longer walk or even a jog!

4. Mix in a salad!

Veggies are crucial in giving your body what it needs. They are full of fiber and healthy nutrients and taste delicious! Substituting veggies for bread, treats, or starches once a day will help you feel better and have more energy!

Eat breakfast!

In today’s world, many people make the mistake of skipping breakfast and filling up on lunch and dinner. Eating breakfast helps kick start your metabolism and gives you the energy to tackle the day ahead! If you don't have much time in the morning, plan ahead by preparing it the night before or making my protein bars and grabbing one in the morning!

Eat full fat foods!

Fat doesn't make you fat! Many people get nervous when they see a food label full of fat and usually shy away from it. Our bodies and brains need healthy fats to be productive, so stick to full-fat foods! Foods that are 0% fats are usually full of empty calories (toxic sugars and carbohydrates) that our bodies don't need!

Try to limit added sugars!

Everything you eat should be in moderation! But added sugars find a way of sticking around and being stored as fat in our bodies, so try to limit the amount you eat! Stick to fruits and sweeteners such as honey or maple syrup if you're looking for something sweet!

I know that may seem a little overwhelming, but living a healthy lifestyle is a marathon, not a sprint! Small changes here and there will eventually lead to big ones. Don’t beat yourself up for having a treat or binging here and there because remember you are human and it happens! Instead, have fun with it and reward yourself for making small changes! And remember, nobody is perfect! For those of you who want a little bit more of a challenge, here are a couple of workout circuits you can do in your house without any equipment! You can also download the Sworkit App on your phone as it is a great tool to mix up your home workouts.

These are just a few fun workout ideas that you can easily do in your home or outside on a beautiful day. You can always substitute in different exercises or add in weight to challenge yourself when it gets too easy! Remember to have fun with it and enjoy the journey!
